Courses / Channahon Classic #11
« on: August 28, 2011, 07:38:54 PM »
It's to my disappointment  that #11 won't be open for the Classic. It's now a two year old project. One year it's too wet & the next too dry. It's too bad the years weren't flipped. I bought numerous bags of top soil & reseeded around the basket. I seriously contemplated killing everything & laying sod. The reward was not reasonable to the expense & the labor involved . So we wait.

Thank You's / Mike H. & Winter League
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:31:27 PM »
Mike Holmquist kicked some of the winter league funds to Channahon. I have an envelope full of receipts & counting. I just bought a bottle a bottle of Demand for $120.00 & that's half price. I'm going to buy 3 to 4 trees of a size of 2" to 3" replacing the dead ones.  I may have to purchase wood chips. I'm trying to get them for free, but I don't have Thor's magic. I have my work cut out to get it ready for the Classic.
Thanks Mike!!!

J-Town Ice Bowl / A Touch of Cool
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:53:35 PM »
Just a few months ago we had the Ice Bowl. The blizzard with 20" of snow. The crew that came out to shovel the tees, the same week of the storm, was awesome! The Park people were impressed.

Courses / Battlement or Castle Block?
« on: July 05, 2011, 04:14:28 AM »
I don't know for sure what they're called, but they're  on the wall by #2 basket at Channahon. They're 6" x 8" blocks spaced on the timbers. I'm only bringing it up because J-Town disc club paid for the material.

Courses / Channahon Mosquitoes
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:36:15 PM »
Channahon is well known for it's mosquitoes, & I was ill prepared tonight at handicap league. Even with the wind, it was like stink on shit. You could smack 6 to 8 with one hit. I know this is little notice for doubles, but be prepared. Bring some insect repellent.

Thank You's / Thor & Randy
« on: June 02, 2011, 04:19:29 AM »
Thirteen large trees were planted at Channahon this spring. Nine are dead, all maples. Thor shared his free trees from Green Glen Nursery, some were dug in 2008. It was a tough week coordinating a truck & the trailer. At the last minute Randy said he would drive, even though ha had other plans for the holiday weekend. We were able to get six trees & with the park's help (Lisa) planted four. We replaced three & a new spot for one. We still have two more to plant, with three more to pick up. It was a big deal, losing so many trees. Thanks ypu guys!

Shoot The Breeze / Memorial Day Kudos
« on: May 28, 2011, 06:39:28 PM »
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.
It was first promoted in May 1868, 3 years after the Civil War. I think in the neighbor hood of 650,000 died in that war. It's easy to understand that thinking, a gruesome war!
It seems that many look at it as a three day week end with little thought of why  & there's history in our country.
Only one disc golfer I know is a veteran. What I'd like to see, dead or alive, is a parent, uncle, friend, to show appreciation for their service by mentioning their name. I think it would be nice to honor them.
Remember, freedom is not free!

Shoot The Breeze / Memorial Day Memories
« on: May 26, 2011, 09:18:40 PM »
I'm an Air Force Vietnam Veteran. I was stationed at Da Nang & a Crew Cheif on F4's, the Phantom. I was sent an email tonight relative to my tour. it was  received with teary eyes & smiles. Like a bad marriage, the trend being down.
I'm in a different environment today. I have a different family today, clueless of my past. I had a spirit that was not broken & I've shared some of those experiences.
A few have sacrificed for many.
Happy Memorial Day People!!!

Thank You's / What is a Silly Man?
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:36:06 PM »
As many of you know I'm loaded with things in my suv. I have a simple philosophy, if it's not above the passenger window, so I can see the mirror that's OK. If things don't obstruct my rear view mirror that's OK also. Well, I look for bargins on plants for the park, & I found a good buy. I bought the tree & brought it to an area where where I could put into the car. I drove up & looked at the size of the container relative to the opening I had to put it in & it was oh boy! It wasn't going to work. Relative to my other post, I'm thinking silly, silly man. I couldn't container through the window, the container was larger. I'm going oh boy I need help.  So here he comes to save the day, Flash! He drove to Morris, we loaded the tree & then drove to Channahon & helped me plant it.
The moral of this story is thanks Flash!!!

Courses / Number One

Hole #1  at Channahon is moved. It's 45' longer. That makes that hole around 272'.  I started digging around the basket & Dan Wisemantle pulled up & helped out. The Park brought a machine down & that's how we got it out of the hole.

Thank You's / More Thanks!
« on: April 14, 2011, 05:09:00 AM »
A lot has been going on at Channahon the last month or so. Carbo has been helping the last 3 days, including today. What we're doing is labor intensive. Shawn Harmon helped by being a bed edger out. Carbo & I are cleaning the beds. I wasn't able to jump on that right away & we've had a couple or rains. We have to re dig the edge cut the grass out where necessary & then find a spot to dump the excess.
Dan Wisemantle flipped me 10 bucks. What a guy!
I can't say enough about the Park's cooperation! What the Park superintendent said, after I was diagnosed with cancer, they don't know what the future will bring. They lost a key foreman to cancer. Hey!.......whatever it takes!
Carbo, Shawn, Dan, Gary Lewis & the Channahon Park District,
                                    THANKS!!!

Thank You's / Who is That Masked Man?
« on: April 08, 2011, 09:48:49 PM »
Do you remember The Lone Ranger & Tonto? Anyway, this guy was a stranger to me. He actually didn't have a mask. The theme of the series was the masked man doing good & at the end of the show it was said who was that masked man? That was the Lone Ranger!
A young man in his mid twenties flipped me $20.00! It's really unheard of! I was bullshitting with him the day before, & this day on their second round he gave me the money. I tried to remember his face, but I see so many. I'm kicking myself for not asking his name.
So big guy, if you read this board, be sure to say hi & introduce yourself. Thanks!!! You blew my socks off!
