Title: First Flight - Ams only A-Tier - March 29th & 30th
Post by: Aces and Chains on December 12, 2013, 12:28:15 PM
A-Tier Amateur only PDGA sanctioned tournament.

March 29th & 30th.

Three 18 hole rounds at Channahon Community Park, and Round Barn Farm DGC in Manhattan, IL over the course of two days. See below for course schedules.

Channahon Community Park is one of the most picturesque courses in the J-Town area. Thanks to the Sodfather, Frank Grimes, this course always looks great. Cement tee pads, and benches at many of the holes, it's a great place to play. Hole 4 has a raised green, as does hole 11. Hole 9 and 14 will test your distance. The course has an even mix of lefty and righty shots. Definitely a must play if you are in the area.

Round Barn Farm is one of the newest courses in the area. With two sets of championship level baskets on each hole, it has a lot of variety of shots. There are also 3 water holes on the course, giving it that pucker factor. Playing thru mature trees, it is also a scenic course to play. RBF is a great addition to the J-town area.

I am working hard to get sponsors so I can make this the best event possible for the players. I'll list the players pack as it stands right now, but it may change (for the better) as more sponsors come on board.

Players Pack:

Innova Disc
Latitude/Westside Disc
Local Disc Golf Calendar
Long Sleeve Dry Fit T-shirt (Must pre-register by February 14th!)
Commemorative Poster
Tournament Mini
Players Guide

Both discs in the players pack are to be determined as we get closer to the tournament and see what each manufacturer has available.

Registration fee is $50 cash (at the shop) or $52 online. Pre-registration is mandatory. We will not be taking walk ups for this tournament. Also, since it's an A-tier, PDGA membership is a requirement. Pre-register at: http://www.acesandchains.com/node/21 (http://www.acesandchains.com/node/21)

Information about check in times, players meeting(s), and tee times will be available as we get closer to the tournament dates.

Tentative division schedule:

Saturday (2 rounds):

Channahon Community Park (Tee time: 9:30am):

All Advanced divisions
Intermediate

Round Barn Farm (Tee time: 9:00am):

All women's divisions
Recreational
Novice
All Jr. divisions

Sunday (1 round + final 9 for Adv. Men):

Channahon Community Park (Tee time: 9:00am):

All women's divisions
Recreational
Novice
All Jr. divisions

Round Barn Farm (Tee time 9:30am):

All Advanced divisions
Intermediate

We have room for 144 players in this tournament, and I expect it to fill. Pre-registration is open as of today.

Thanks again to everyone in the disc golf community for your continued support! I couldn't do it without you.

That's awesome Shawn, I really appreciate that! I will put out a call for volunteers as it gets closer and I will create a list of what needs to be done. Currently, the biggest thing I need help with is getting sponsors. The more sponsors, the more return I can give to the players. I would like to get some cash sponsors so I can increase the players pack. That'll be the toughest type of sponsor to get. But we can also use CTP/hole sponsors. I'm attaching my sponsor letter to this post in case anyone wants to take a crack at it. It's hard work, but can be very rewarding when you get that first "Yes."

You'll need Powerpoint to open it.

Note that I've set my sights high, but that you can down sell any of these sponsorships for as little as half of what is listed. Any sponsor, no matter how small, is welcome. Every little bit helps.

I know this question is going to come up, so I'll post the answer ahead of time:

Pros rated under 970 can play in the Advanced division in an A, B, or C-tier PDGA sanctioned tournament.

Final 9 for the top four advanced players:

I have play tested a 9 hole safari setup at RBF for the final 9. It's really going to test each players skill level, and could easily result in the top four places changing during the last 9 holes. Only the top 4 Advanced players will play it, and spectators are encouraged. I plan to have a portable leaderboard for the top 4 so spectators can easily see the scoring changes from hole to hole.

I appreciate that Rob! The more players we have that take advantage of the offer, the more likely they are to continue their support again next year. I tried to get them to be the title sponsor this year, but I couldn't get them to pull the trigger. If they see enough support, maybe next year they will. In order to make this a full A-tier (with Pros included) in the future, I'll need a title sponsor. So definitely, if you can stay at the hotel, that would be great!

Here's the breakdown on who plays where:

2 rounds at Channahon (1 long, 1 short) on Sat. and 1 round at RBF (Red baskets) Sun:

Int
Adv
Adv Masters
Adv Grandmasters
Adv Sr. Grandmasters

2 rounds at RBF on Sat (1 Silvers, 1 Reds) and 1 round at Channahon Sun (shorts):

Nov
Rec
All Women's divisions
All Jr. Divisions

We will also have a final 9 for the top 4 in the Men's Advanced division at RBF on Sunday. The final 9 will be a tough layout. I'm hoping to keep it relatively secret until just before the tourney. But I can tell you it will be a safari setup (ie: not the normal course layout), and it will be long. It should test the abilities of the top four, and provide for a good show for the spectators.

We're starting to get some of the smaller divisions to sign up. Let's see if we can get at least 4 in each of the following groups:

Advanced Senior Grandmaster: 1 signed up so far
Advanced Master: 2 signed up so far
Novice Women: 1 signed up so far

All divisions are available. I think Legend is the only one I don't have on the list and I'll happily add it if someone wants to play in it.

Don't forget to sign up by Feb 14th to get the fly dry long sleeve t-shirt. Anyone signing up after Feb 14th will not receive a shirt (but you'll still get the rest of our great players pack!) Registration is available here: http://www.acesandchains.com/node/21 (http://www.acesandchains.com/node/21)

The list of players currently registered is available here:  http://www.pdga.com/tour/event/16436 (http://www.pdga.com/tour/event/16436)

If there are at least 3 players signed up in a division, I'll have a trophy for you.

If you finish "in the cash," you'll receive a gift card for the appropriate amount to Aces and Chains Disc Golf shop. You can pick up your plastic that day, or anytime thereafter.

This is a good question by the way, as some tournaments are moving toward a trophy only format with bigger players packs. But we'll be doing payouts just like normal.

"Fantastic. For me, First Flight is the light at the end of this snow tunnel. Your really busting a$$ Patrick, keeping us motivated this winter."

Thanks guys! It's comments like these that keep me rolling. As you know, I normally run 5-6 tournaments a year. But, last year there were just too many tournaments, and I felt it watered down the attendance at each one. So I decided this year to run only two, but to make each one the best I can make it. So, First Flight became an A-Tier, and Wild West is a B-tier. My intention is to continue this way in the years to come, slowly building First Flight into a full A-tier (including the Pros.) Next year I hope to incorporate the new course at Dellwood Park, and to add the Pros as at least a B-tier. If new baskets go in at Highland, then I'll run the Pro's there.

I have added a Trilogy Challenge at West Park on July 5th to my plate, but it's going to be a fund raiser for cement tee pads at West, which we've needed for a long time. And it'll be super easy to run, and a more casual tournament for the players.

Thanks again for the kind words!

I can help with Channahon. Spot where needed & the 10 meter circles. I just need the paint & help. I'm going to the gym, trying to get back in shape, but some simple things are difficult, like breathing on the treadmill. Weights on a machine are not an issue, & riding a bike isn't a problem. So, some help will be appreciated.

8.) Put up hole sponsor signs and take them down at Channahon Sunday
9.) Photographers! Need photographers!
10.) Also would like to have a few more Videographers.
11.) Someone to hold the leaderboard sign during the final 9
12.) Spotter(s) at Channahon both days
13.) Spotter(s) at RBF both days

If I think of more, I'll add it to the list. As volunteers come in, I will put their name on the list next to the job they want to help out with. Thanks in advance!
So, maybe my hero, Shawn McCarthy, or others will give me a hand with that task.
Good for you Frankie! I find the gym a great place to find positive. Sometimes I go there 3 times a day but only exercise once. People are warm and I want to live longer.

Anyone want to give Frank a hand with the circles the week before the tournament?

The players pack is set, and both discs have been determined:

Innova Star Destroyer with custom hotstamp
Latitude Gold Saint Pro with custom full color Deco-Dye
Long Sleeve Dri-Fit T-Shirt with custom tournament print (If you pre-registered by Feb 14th)
Local Disc Golf Calendar
Mini with custom tournament stamp
Tournament Poster
Players Guide

I'm also working on the first place trophies for each division. They are going to be sweet! I'll post some pics when I'm done. Every division with three or more players by March 21st will have a first place trophy.

Please remember that you MUST be a current PDGA member by tournament time, or you will not be allowed to play. If the PDGA doesn't show you as current, please bring proof of your membership renewal. If you are renewing any later than today, I would recommend keeping the email, or whatever proof you have so there will be no questions.

We have 25 spots remaining between the Rec, Nov, Woman's, and Jr. Divisions.

We have 38 spots remaining between the Adv, and Int divisions.

We're Down to 19 spots remaining between the Rec, Nov, Woman's, and Jr. Divisions.

We have 36 spots remaining between the Adv, and Int divisions.

89 players registered so far. Don't wait too long! I will not be adding temp holes, or allowing 5 on a tee box to put more players in the tournament. 144 is the maximum. I will fill spots as they come in. It's possible someone might register after the tournament is full. If that happens, I will refund their money, and offer to put them on a waiting list, or in a different division.

Update:

10 spots left in the "lower" divisions (Rec, Nov, and Women's)
23 spots left in the "upper" divisions (Adv and Int divisions)

Registration will close on Wednesday, March 26th at 4pm. Of course, if we fill before then, it will close at that time.

Another reminder: You must be a current PDGA member by tournament time or you will not be allowed to play! No exceptions. If you don't show as current on the PDGA site, please bring proof that you've signed up.

I don't think I've mentioned yet that the DG Guy, Terry Miller will be at the tournament videotaping for his blog. Very excited to have him there and to meet him in person!

LSDiscs will be running a doubles tournament at Channahon on Friday, March 28th....more details when I get them.

Also, we have two more new hole sponsors!

Paul Kenney - Gives great DG lessons, and runs the Sunrise League in Bartlett.
The Penalty Box - 16108 S. Rt. 59, Plainfield, IL  60586

I might be able to do some photography for a few hours on both days. I will let you know for sure in the next couple days. I really wanted to play in this tournament, but had other obligations, but i still might be able to make it out in the mornings into the early afternoon.

Patrick, if the water is not cleared up come time for the tourney on hole 6 at channahon, are you going to put up a temp basket for that hole? I was out there today and the course was flooded pretty bad. Hopefully it gets warm and that water clears up a little bit.

Yeah, there are plenty of options for a temp hole or two at Channahon if needed. Of course, I'm hoping it dries up nicely before then. But if not, I have 3 chainstar baskets that I can use for "emergency" purposes.

Hey Northern golfers. I am coming in from St. Louis, MO for the First flight, and wondered if anybody would be willing to let me crash on their couch or have a spare room. I don't drink or smoke(anything), boring I know, but I really don't have the cash to fork over for a hotel room. Any Help is appreciated. Thanks!

One hole #6, the down hill one, was in question Thursday. It could be played then, so after 3 days, I don't think it will be a problem. Hole #10 has water in front of the tee, but not an issue. You can walk on the left side to stay out of the water.

First Flight, the first A-Tier that has ever been held in the Joliet area, was a success! We had a great time all weekend, culminating in a great show put on by the top 4 advanced players in the “Final 9” holes at Round Barn Farm. Thank you to everyone who came out to play, everyone who went to flymart, the players party, and who came out to watch the Final 9!

I have a lot of people to thank.

First and foremost, I can’t say enough good things about my TD’s. Aaron Studer, Kevin Schramm, Paul Kenny, and Mike Kursell all did an outstanding job, and went above and beyond the call to make this tournament a success. Without them, this tournament would never have been possible. Please shake their hand and share your positive thoughts with them when you see them. They worked hard all weekend!

I’d also like to thank Frank Grimes and Shawn McCarthy for their course maintenance work at Channahon. My apologies to Frank for sending 144 players through the course at this early date. As I mentioned on Facebook, I will not be giving that early of a date to the PDGA as an option next year, even if it’s the third option.

And hey, thanks to Terry Miller, the DG Guy for coming out to video tape the tournament! Terry’s a great guy. I saw him helping vendors at the flymart, in addition to his videotaping duties. Check out his footage of the tournament on his You tube blog. First day’s highlights can be found here:

Below is the complete list of people who helped out at the tournament. My sincere thanks to each and every one of you. It’s great to be part of such a helpful community of disc golfers! Hopefully, I don’t forget anyone!

TD’s: Aaron Studer, Kevin Schramm, Paul Kenny, & Mike Kursell
Artist and creative assistance: Mike Kursell
Course Maintenance: Frank Grimes and Shawn McCarthy
Photography: Daniel Czempinski & Aaron Studer
Videographers: DG Guy Terry Miller & Ryan Fancher
T-Shirts: Ryan Fancher
Spotter: Cory Hill of Soul Flight Disc Golf
Banners: Mike Eichorst & Eric Fite
Scorecards and leaderboard help: Ryan Fancher, Daniel Czempinski & Ryan Barcas
Sponsor Tee signs: Jeremiah Bly, Mike Eichorst, and Ismael Ochoa
Doubles tournament: Lars of LSDiscs
Getting Sponsors: Larry Pennuto
Carrying the Final 9 leaderboard: Jeremiah Bly
Assistance during Final 9: Jose Herrera
Clean up afterward: Blaine & Christie Schepp

Lastly, I’d like to thank Kyle Chapman, Zack Zandstra, Alex Nimtz, and Jason LeQuesne for putting on a great show during the Final 9.

Thanks again to everyone. Let’s keep this positive vibe going all summer!

Patrick -

Thanks for asking me to help out!  I'm glad to have done it for you.  It was an outstanding experience start to finish!  I learned a few things along the way and I think some if not many of the players did as well.  I hope you consider asking me to help again!

Thank you!
