The Professional Disc Golf Association is pleased to announce the winning applicants for the June 2012 round of innovation grants.

Steve Mentrek: Disc Golf Clinics for Special Olympics Athletes - This project is geared towards introducing local Special Olympic athletes to the sport of disc golf. Through the use of local volunteers, we can create an inclusive opportunity for individuals with disabilities to see more of what their community has to offer.

Thor Batchelor: Trinity Lakes Disc Golf Course Handicap Accessibility Improvements - Trinity Links offers a blend of competitive sport and fun recreation for people of many ability levels. This year, a caring group of disc golf enthusiasts and a small army of volunteer carpenters began working to make the course 100% handicapped accessible. They are building accessible walkways and bridges near all ten holes that need them. They have completed five hole and expect to complete the rest this year.

Diane D. Nilan:  HEAR US! Disc Us! - HEAR US! Disc Us! connects kids without homes to a sport that will bring them joy for the rest of their lives! Disc Golf-loving members of HEAR US Inc., a national nonprofit organization giving voice and visibility to homeless children and youth, will team up with some of the Midwest's ardent disc golfers to share this sport with homeless kids. Instruction, playing time, prizes and refreshments included.

Adam S. Johnson:   YMCA Youth Disc Golf Program - Disc golf is like ball golf: only faster, healthier and more affordable. The YMCA of Greater Kansas City is offering disc golf as a youth sport this summer. Using YMCA core values participants will learn the basics of disc golf: throwing techniques, rules, respect for the environment and good sportsmanship.

Joey Duckett:  Azleway Eagles Disc Golf (AEDG) - Create a course at the Azleway's Boys Ranch, a home for troubled boys. Volunteers from the local disc golf club will help refurbish donated baskets and install them on the course and teach the boys how to play to fill their spare time with a healthy, productive activity.

The PDGA Innovation Grant Program was created to increase and promote the awareness of the sport of disc golf and the Professional Disc Golf Association. Applicants are encouraged to think outside of the box to develop innovative and unique programs which will promote the sport and increase participation. The PDGA office received fourteen applications for this round of grants. Each of the five recipients above will receive a grant in the amount of $500 to help fund their dream disc golf project. Nine other very worthy projects were reviewed and considered by the staff and Board of Directors. We wish to extend our most sincere thanks to everyone who submitted an application and we encourage you to apply again if you were not successful.

Applications for the next round of PDGA Innovation Grants are due on December 1, 2012, when five more grants in the amount of $500 will be awarded in mid December. The completed grant application along with additional requested information and any supporting documents you wish to include must be received by the PDGA office on or before December 1st.
