Title: Worlds Smoking Ban
Post by: Disc71 on April 22, 2011, 07:19:17 AM
http://www.pdga.com/worlds-smoking-ban

Smoking has been banned during competition at both the 2011 PDGA Professional and Amateur Disc Golf World Championships. Players will not be permitted to smoke from the start of play until the player’s scorecard has been submitted. Smoking of any kind during competition could result in immediate disqualification and further disciplinary action as stated in the PDGA Competition Manual, Section 3.3 Player Misconduct.

After many months of contemplation, In January 2011 the PDGA Board made the decision to restrict smoking during both the 2011 PDGA Pro World Championships in Santa Cruz CA and the 2011 PDGA Amateur & Junior World Championships in Rochester NY. The Board was well aware of the potential ramifications of this decision and how others have addressed this issue, and this board (as has past boards) debated this issue for some time before making this decision for 2011.The board has not made any decisions on a long term smoking policy for our major events. With the 2011 PDGA Pro Worlds in Santa Cruz requiring a smoking ban due to the drought conditions in California, the Board felt this was the opportune time to test the waters on the impact of a smoking ban at our two (2) most visible and public events – the PDGA World Championships.

We will evaluate the effects of this policy for the future at our 2011 Fall Summit, and we welcome your comments and suggestions.

ON BEHALF OF THE 2011 PDGA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dave “Nez” Nesbitt

PDGA Commissioner & Board President

Great rule. Wish it was PDGA wide! Cigarette butts are sickening.

I read that on the PDGA website & it freaked me out! The problem I have with that rule is more & more of our rights are taken away. The government is trying to tell us what to eat, what light bulbs to buy, what cars to drive. Now the PDGA board! There is a rule & it's called a courtesy violation to deal with cigarettes butts. I don't smoke & cigarette smoke makes me gag. I believe in freedom! I strongly disapprove of this rule.

Obesity in our children today is running rampant. Love taking pop out of schools and making healthier meals for the kids!  But if a child wants to eat unhealthy they can still pack a lunch full of fat if they want. Obesity will skyrocket health insurance in the future. So out of control. Should of done that years ago. You can buy any light bulb you want still but only makes sense to save money and the earth.  You can still buy any car you want. Nobody can force you to buy any car. And coutesy rules won't clean up the butts and keep the smoke away from the people who don't want their lungs full of cancer. If you can play a round without drinking it's pretty safe to say you can play a round without smoking. I love this free country of ours!!!

You are a silly, silly man. First how can you be free when others tell you what to do & when you can do it?  Our freedom is being taken away inch by inch!!! Silly man, you can't see what's going on?  Catholic churches can't have bake sales! General Electric didn't pay any taxes. What's wrong with that picture? Back to the obesity. Should the government ban donuts? Or give out coupons ?
This to me is an extension of what the government is doing.  Telling me I can't smoke outdoors freaks me out!! I agree to field strip your cigarette butts. And Hey, I pick up cigarette butts,  twice as many as you, I have two hands.
Your friend & brother! :)

Yes! I love this stuff! Two good buddies battling over a disc golf issue and then the inevitable happens. Politics rears its head and takes control over their minds. That was entertaining. You guys should run for some type of office so you can release all that stuff built up inside. Don’t worry we still love you guys.
What would we do without you.

My opinion is I think the rule is harsh for the players who take care of their habit’s mess. At any Worlds level I think majority of the players know to pick-up after themselves and most are courteous to where their smoke blows.

It's all good! Ain't the first time me and Frankie talked politics and it probably won't be the last. We are going to BWW for sure Frank when I get back from Georgia. I still have that coupon for us and I can't wait to have your company again Brother! I know you have been working your ass off at Channy and I can't wait to get out there to see all the good things you did. Much appreciated for your hard work for all of us Disc Golfers! YOU DA MAN!!! And I still love the trouble maker Jesse lol lol!

Hey Jr. this isn't over! I didn't think you smoked dope, you're comments make me wonder. General Electric make turbine blades for the bogus wind energy. The government (toy boy obama) gives them money to make the blades & they out source them. Jeff Immelt, CEO for GE, is the jobs Czar for the toy boy administration. Huh?! They didn't pay income tax, oh I forgot that's Bush's fault. I never paid more for gasoline, over $4.00, that f'n Bush. Oh I get it, the 800 billion omnibus bill didn't work, that f'n Bush. The S&P downgraded our long term debt rating, I know, I know, Bush! We can give two billion to Brazil for their off shore drilling but ban the U.S. drilling. Then he tells Brazil we'll be their best customer. I know Bush told him what to say.
Well my brother without the same mother, I love the handicap!!!

Why does the nonsmoker have to avoid standing by the cigarette smoker? It should go both ways! Ever think about the smoker not standing next to a nonsmoker? And I seen alot of people throw their butts on the course. It's not just the people you think. I seen it all over. It's just during Worlds their talking about. With the publicity that Disc Golf gets at Worlds you would think it would look better for the game not seeing the players smoking. And theirs other people like me who were born with asthma which the smoke affects their game. PEACE

As far as it bothering other players, I believe it is common courtesy at tournaments to ask your fellow players before lighting up. That, in itself, should be enough without making a rule against it.

I'm with Frank on this one. While I won't be affected by the ban, I am all for protecting personal freedoms. I see this as a slippery slope leading to a more uptight sport.............which basically takes away everything I like about playing.

Just one man's opinion, and I certainly won't slam anyone who believes otherwise.....

What are you telling me Patrick? You're typically against me? That's OK. There is no reason to me besides polotics. Like I mentioned earlier, it's a courtesy violation to leave butts. From my experience, once I gag, the smokers typically go down wind. I'm an ex cigarette smoker of 41 years, but good grief!, give the smokers a break, outside, in open areas? If smoking was illeagle, different argument.

"What are you telling me Patrick? You're typically against me?"

Lol Frank! Only if we're playing in the same division.....

I think I put it that way because we are polar opposites politically. Or at least, I thought so until I saw this post. Little did I know you were a closet Liberal!

Just kidding Frank. Seriously, every American should be for personal freedom as long as it doesn't harm others. Smoking outside? I find it hard to make a strong argument for a ban on smoking. Cigarette butts are a huge nuisance......I hate them. But, I don't have a problem with smoking them, just leaving them everywhere. And we have a rule against that already.

Lest it get lost in the shuffle, there is a very good reason for the ban in San Diego. Forest fires are serious business, and banning smoking for that reason is something I fully support. But when you add the ban for the New York event, it becomes a completely different discussion.

Speaking of turning Liberal Frank, should I add your email to the MoveOn list? You'll get some great political emails that are sure to make you "chuckle."

This is just my opinion.

To me, this all comes down to the saying "perception is more important than reality."

I hate that saying.

And so, the PDGA board wants disc golf to "look good" in the eyes of others. Presumably, they want disc golf to have a better rep so the sport will grow bigger. That is the real reason for the ban, and more to the point, the reason a lot of people will support the ban.

We aren't really trying to stop smoking. No, we're just trying to hide the fact that we do so everyone will look up to us and say....."hey, there's a nice sport to play and/or watch."

It certainly isn't about the cigarette butts. I can promise you that. (Though not having them on the course would be a very welcome side effect.)

I don't smoke, and I don't like cigarette smoke one bit. But that doesn't mean I agree with a ban of smoking, while outdoors nonetheless!

And this is why I shy away from most of the conversations about making the sport bigger. Most people I talk to begin to think in terms of making the sport "look better" by mandating collared shirts, smoking bans, and ideas like that.

If we are going to talk about "looking better" in the eyes of the public, then we should instead concentrate on real concrete ways of improving our image that are based in fact, not in perception.

Improving our courses thru hard work and donations, helping the community (Ice bowl), and bringing new people into the sport are all ways to improve how we are perceived without giving up our freedoms. I could name off a dozen people from the area who do just that, without breaking a sweat. A hearty thank you, from me, to everyone who does. That is, in my opinion, the proper way to be a good role model for the community, and to increase the positive vibes for disc golf as a whole.

A smoking ban? Bah!

I once asked my Mom about the saying "Perception is more important than reality" and she said....

"It sounds like somebody's lying!"

Trust a Mom to put things in their proper perspective.

I heard something on the radio about asking the MLB players union, to ban players from chewing during World Series play. Dick Durbin, (Illinois) Frank Lautenberg, Richard Blumrnthal, & Tom Harkin all senators, wrote letters to the MLB players union.
First I cannot stand cigarette smoke & at times I gag. To be clear, I can gag without the smoke. I quit smoking Christmas 1970, & it's repulsive to me. Cigars & the wacky tobacco are not. Huh!?
It freaks me out that our freedoms  are being taken away. A little here & a little there. I realize it's not healthy, but I used to think we had choices. Liquor for example. I wonder if that's abused? Why pick on tobacco? Look at the old movies, they all smoked. Maybe Paladin, & Matt Dillion didn't.
Keep in mind my point of view comes from the late 60's. Also note I chew, or suck, I'm on the pouches.
Your so good for my blood pressure problem Jesse.  :P

Did you see it?!!! Top of the 1st, a batter in the on deck circle, had a mouth full.  ;D  So much for the letter from the idiot, Dick Durbin. Our country has problems & it's not tobacco. I'm not a fan of Mark Kirk either, Illinois senator. He voted for the carbon tax. Can you imagine being taxed for the air you exhale? This the change you can believe in. obama said that, he also said he campaigned in 57 states & had one more to go. The president of the United States said that! I could go on.
Your killing me Jesse. ;D
