The nomination process is over. Due to the overwhelming votes going towards one person we will not vote on the nominees. So the winner of the Gary Lewis Achievement Award this year goes to... I can’t tell you. The winner will be announced and presented a plaque at the J-Town Doubles League party on October 16. Sorry I guess you just have to be there to find out the winner.

Frank Grimes - Some of the reasons why he was awarded The Gary Lewis Achievement Award.

Raised over $3500 for Morning Star Mission at the J-Town Ice Bowl
http://www.morningstarmission.org/

Busted ass all year while battling cancer to continually make Community Park one of the most friendly and beautiful places to play disc golf. The amount of time and hard work that he puts into this course is breathtaking.

Community Park in Channahon was in immaculate condition for all  5 tournaments held there in 2010
The List:
J-Town Ice Bowl • Feb. 27, 2010
The Dave Pitner Memorial • May 1 & 2, 2010
Chain Reaction 2010 • June 26 & 27, 2010
2010 J-Town Disc Golf Club Invitational • July 9, 2010
23rd Channahon Classic • September 25 & 26, 2010

Vice President of the J-Town Disc Golf Club
http://jtowndiscgolf.com/SMF1/index.php?topic=8.0

One of the founders of the Frank & Bean’s Handicap League.

Worked extremely hard on getting Highland Park into shape for IL State. Concrete work, stump removal, garbage pick-up, and hours of weed whacking including a couple of hours in the morning before he played in the tournament.

He worked anywhere and everywhere when he was called upon.

Sorry Paco that this wasn’t mentioned at the ceremony.

Please feel free to elaborate on anything that was missed or something you feel should be mentioned about Frank.

Franks achievements were not only in the J-Town area. Frank managed to venture off to Eagle Ridge Park in Oswego and put in some high quality tee boxes and to be chased around by the Park District for removing stumps lol lol. So glad to see such positive results for you Frank.

                             Positive, positive, positive!

                                            :)

Jesse Saenz

Absolutely, Jesse's name should be on that list! He fits the description nicely.
Not only does he make a good candidate this year, but he has a long history that fits this award description. Thanks for all the good times at doubles, and the quality ISDGC tournament every year!

I'd also like to plug for Dean Bingham: This guy does a lot behind the scenes that many disc golfers may be unaware of. I think most of us that frequent J-Town understand this, but it won't hurt to mention it here. I just seem to see his name mentioned on every project that gets done in the area. Glad to see you get nominated Dean!

Thor Batchelor has done a fantastic job over at Trinity Links this year. Amazing amount of changes that have made that course more interesting, and more challenging. Congrats on getting nominated Thor!

And then we have the dark horse.....Jason Poole. I say dark horse because Jason is so quiet. He's like Andre Johnson in the NFL.....indespensible to his team, but not the first name to come to mind because he's so quiet and unassuming. Great to see you get nominated Jason!

I want to add something about Jason Poole. He spent $1,200 to $1,300 for a sewing machine.  What he did is made an awesome score card holder with the club colors. It is sick! He's a computer geek not a seamstress.

Thanks for the compliments guys.
It’s a great honor to win and have my name on the Gary Lewis Achievement Award. I’ve known Gary Lewis for over 20 years and I’ve seen first hand his life long commitment to disc golf. I’ve seen some of the Hall of Fame list of accomplishments he has achieved in disc golf. He has always thought of his fellow disc golfer first before himself. The Joliet area is a very lucky disc golf community to say he is one of us.
The doubles league and the few tournaments I have run are directly modeled after the way Gary Lewis would run it. He has taught me a lot about all aspects of disc golf and life in general.
One of the best parts of winning this award is that the J-Town community thought highly enough of me to vote for me.
I love you guys!

I need help keeping track of what people are accomplishing in the J-Town area starting from September 2011 and ending September 2012. I started keeping a list but I need help throughout the next 9 months. Frank said he would help but it would be good to have one or two more individuals keeping track. It would be great to have the most deserving and extensive list possibly for the next GLA Award winner. Let me know if you can help. Post under here, email or call me.

If this helps anyone, I'm making notes & putting it off to the side. As Jesse said it started Sept. We have the J-Town board members that get little notice. Jason Poole is quite active behind the scene with the web site & many other things. It may have at some time happened, but he was huge in having a club. Mike Kursell is another is another in the backround. Also, Jason is great help in our tournaments, that's more out in the open. Recently Thor & Dave K. are on my list. I think what I'm going to do is make a list of names & give a # of what I judge as worthy from 1 to 10. As an example the Frank & Beans handicap. Dean does that all summer, & that gets a #.  Jason Poole is the webmaster year round that would get a #. I don't want to make a decision based the last two or three months in the summer.

I also need to mention disc golf in our area is year round. As you know we have winter doubles. Mike Mick & Carbo run that. Something needs to be said for that. When it's super cold they're out there. We don't have to show up but they do. Even though summer league is longer, there is hardship in the winter.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm new, I don't know anyone yet, but I am more than willing to help as much as I can. When I do something - like start Disc Golf - I jump in all the way to my head and sink or swim! Don't know if that is relevent, but I guess what I am saying is that I am already in love with this sport and want to do what I can to make it better for myself and everyone else that loves it.

It's time to start putting up names of nominees.
You have Thor & the gang that helps him. Enough can't be said about Jason Poole. Your partner Darrin. My bias is to those with non profit motives, like yourself. It tells me where their heart is when it's for free, & an atta boy for encouragement.

Also I will need help with IL State. I need spotters on each day and guys who are willing to get there earlier to set up and stay late to brake things down. We will also be having a couple of all out garbage collecting, weed whacking, ball busting clean up days at Highland Park very soon. Check for dates at this link. I'll have the info soon.

I am very proud to say that I served 9 years active duty and I know exactly how it feels to be deployed and how much care packages and letters from home really impact deployed troops, so I will bring some stuff next handicap or doubles league next week.

I have a weed whacker and can help with work day stuff at Highland. Let's get it done! I'll bring my kids and make 'em pick up trash for ice cream!  ;D

That's GREAT! I need a spirit lift. I know about being deployed also. I also know about being hated when the tour is over. The care packages are for Wed. Maybe we can hook up Tuesday. I'll be there Tuesday & my name is Frank, please introduce yourself.

Mike Kursell: He may have been mentioned already. Mike does all my artwork for the tournaments, and I know he does a lot of artwork for other TDs as well. I am constantly getting compliments on his hotstamps and posters in the shop. He never asks for anything in return. He also helps Gary sometimes. There may be other things he does for the sport that I'm not aware of as well.

Jesse,

Please put Mike Kursell on the list of nominees. He has long been a part of the disc golf scene around Joliet. He does all my artwork, and never asks for anything in return. I know he has done artwork for J-town this year as well, and Thor, etc. We are lucky to have so many talented individuals passionate about disc golf, and Mike Kursell is certainly one of them.

Are you looking for comments on the listed people?  All have contributed. I'm not sure, but I think Tom Matesevac & Dan O. contributed a great deal this last year. Without waiting for your answer I'm commenting the top & bottom of the list, Thor & Jason. I remember Thor last fall doing tournaments the end of last year. He's been huge at  Lockport with the help of many. He also helped me with getting the travel baskets, for the raffle for  the Ice Bowl. I know he has a lot on his plate, so a lot has been a sacrifice.
I'm a lot closer to what Jason Poole contributes, mainly because of the club, I'm on the board with him. First, he's the staple! He has ideas & plans & executes! He's a big deal with local tournaments with his computer work. Jason is always there, in the grass, helping!!!

Woh...Mr. Frank Grimes isn't on the list!

Please add Frank - not only does he put his time, money, and sweat into beautiful Channy, he is a fantastic person all around. He is battling cancer but still does what he does. He makes an effort to befriend new people and make them feel extremely welcome. If it wouldn't have been for Frank's outward show of support, I don't think I would have had near as much motivation to continue to improve and keep playing the singles league.

Frank, you have my vote, sir!

You have to wait 5-years before winning the award again. Frank won in 2010 which was the first year it was actually given out. We want to spread the award around for the first five-years to the many people in our area that are deserving of it.

The new updated list is below.
The additions are Tom Matesevac, Dan Osysko & Steve Slater. They have all put their blood, sweat and tears into the transformation of Trinity Links. They have all helped on other local courses with improvements and they have all have had vital rolls in many local tournaments.

Thanks Gibby! But as you know, especially being in the Military, about different personalities. It's a big deal being transferred & who do you warm up to & who do you trust?   You are easy easy to warm up to! I'm thrilled in getting to know you. You project as a very good person & welcome!
Now Jess, I'll give you a call for what I know, Slater  was under my radar. We have such a GREAT bunch of people, & most will sacrifice to help, like Shawn Harmon. When you think about it, our Community is huge.

Congratulations Darrin! Now...... I often say things I may be right on with, with but regret later. Darrin is a hand in glove with Jesse & doubles, it really is huge! I like Darrin very much. Thor is also a big deal. He mentored me with donations for the Ice Bowl & is a big deal for Lockport. Both are my friends, but I don't think most know what Jason Poole has done for disc golf the past year. First the handicap, not only was he there every night but he did the spread sheet to make that process easier. He was involved with everything Joliet did the past year!!! He responded to everything asked of him! Lockport tournaments, Jesse's tournaments, club invitational, the woman's tournament, J-Town web site. Darrin is super & very likeable, & has been around forever. The criteria Jesse said was the past year. I'm thrilled for Darrin, but disappointed for Jason.

I need help keeping track of what people are accomplishing in the J-Town area starting from September 30, 2012 and ending September 30, 2013. I started keeping a list but I need help throughout the next 11 months. It would be nice to have one or two more individuals keeping track. It would be great to have the most deserving and extensive list possibly for the next GLA Award winner. Let me know if you can help. It's important the beginning months are not forgotten.
Post under here, email or call me.

Have to second Rob's opinion. Jason has been pretty instrumental in handicap the last two years from what I have seen. He also does some amazing work for the club and the website.

I need help keeping track of all the great things people are doing in our disc golf community from September 1 2013 through September 1 2014. These beginning months are just as important as the later summer months next year. If you can help let me know.

These previous winners are still not eligible next year.
Frank Grimes, Jesse Saenz Jr., Darrin Johnson and Jason Poole.

Giving that the award's namesake is Gary Lewis he is also not eligible. He feels he wins every year by giving the award away.

I've been asked to post my speech for those that couldn't hear me.

Most of you who know me, know I’m not much of a speech person, so I’ll try and keep this brief and just thank all the people who got me involved with the volunteering.

First off, I’d like to thank Gary Lewis, for whom this award is aptly named.  When I first starting playing disc golf in this area, he was pretty much the only person running tournaments.  And they weren’t just your basic tournaments, he ran a very smooth show with all the extras that really make a tournament great.  He was the first person that inspired me to help out.  I would play one day of his events and would show up the other day to give him a hand.

Secondly, I’d like to thank Jesse.  He’s spent countless hours getting courses ready and making sure every little detail that goes into running the biggest and I must say best events get done.  Beyond that, he is a great promoter of the game.  He’s always encouraging new players to join in leagues and tournaments.  Any problems that arise, he manages to handle in a way that makes everyone feel they’ve won.  It’s always a pleasure to help him out in any way I can.

Next, I’d like to thank Frank Grimes.  I know everyone is always talking about how much time he puts into the courses but until I really got involved, I never really know how much time that actually was.  Just look at the number of points he has for the J-Town Disc Golf Club’s Member Reward Program and that doesn’t even include a lot of the work he does out at Channahon and doesn’t want credit for.  Even with all the work he puts in, he is still the first guy to give others a big thank you and props for a job well done.  It seems like, especially this year, that he’s inspiring a whole new generation of players to help out on the course.

Next, I’d like to thank Ray Hill.  He’s another behind the scenes guy who is the inspiration for a lot of what I do.  It’s his ideas that often spark some of the more innovative things we do.  He was the one that asked the state coordinator for the rights to award the IL USDGC spot which lead us to create the Ropes at the Oaks tournament.

Lastly, I'd like to thank all of the J-Town players who come out to these events and show those running it, your appreciation.  A lot of you are willing to step up and help out when it’s needed and it goes a long way towards keeping all these volunteers inspired to keep going.  Thank you.

Shawn McCarthy
Shawn helped me with a number of things, last fall a basket ring #13 Channahon, spring, basket ring #1 Channahon, timber ring basket #18 Lockport. I think more, but I haven't noted. He is always there with a Great attitude! He brings people together when you're around him. He is an ambassador for Disc Golf in our area. Some on the list have created conflict with our community, not Shawn.

With all of the incredible people we have in the J-Town community, it's really hard to pick one. Everyone nominated thus far is definitely deserving of it.

Once again I need help keeping track of all the great things people are doing in our disc golf community from September 1, 2014 through September 1, 2015. The last few months of last year are just as important as the summer months this year. If you can help please let me know.

These previous winners are still not eligible next year.
Frank Grimes, Jesse Saenz Jr., Darrin Johnson, Jason Poole and Sean Callahan.

Giving that the award's namesake is Gary Lewis he is also not eligible. He feels he wins every year by giving the award away.

The votes are in and Shawn McCarthy & Dave Kociuba have tied for this year’s award! So the final decision came down to Gary Lewis himself deciding on the winner. He said BOTH, enough said!
So for the first time we will have two winners. They are both great people and both deserve this great award.
Thanks for all you guys do for our sport!

The 2015 Gary Lewis
Achievement Award Winners

Dave Kociuba  #26608

Shawn McCarthy  #50449

I'm extremely honored and humbled to receive the Gary Lewis Award. In the spirit of keeping things quick on Saturday, I would like to post my long winded speech here and on Facebook. I will of course have a shortened version for the event:

First off,  congratulations to my fellow recipient Dave Kociuba! I feel it's a great thing that there was two of us receiving this award. It shows how much the local community is growing and giving back.

I would like to thank Gary Lewis for not only having this award but for everything he does and has done to promote this sport. There would not be a strong community of disc golfers in this area if not for him. His endless hours of dedication has provided us all courses that we will enjoy for years to come.

The previous winners of this award have continued to remain great ambassadors to the sport in their own ways. But more then that they have inspired those around them, myself being one such person.

Frank Grimes got me into doing course work. From the first time we worked together there was a synergy between us that made the hard work fun. Thanks for being a great role-model.

Jesse and Darrin ran some of the first events I attended. The fun laid back atmosphere of their tourneys kept me coming back. This year I was asked to help with ILL State and had a blast. Thanks for all you guys do, behind the scenes, week after week, year after year for us to have a great time.

Mr. Poole. Prob the most active behind the scenes guy in the Joliet area, maybe the State? He runs bag tags during the winter, handicap during the summer. Helps with course work, is a J-town board member, helps with tournaments and the list goes on and on. I'm very lucky to have him to learn from. Thank you for being awesome.

Sean Callahan, I appreciate you being the first to nominate me this year. Your work at Dellwood is very impressive and I look forward to what you have in-store for the future. Your a passionate person that pushes the sport and the players forward.

I would like to thank my wife Kristi and brother Brad. I love you and thanks for putting up with me.

I would also like to thank Mike Flynn, his help with the Highland wood chip project was crucial.

Finally I would like to thank all of you, the Disc Golfing community. From the Pro to the Am, I have meet all types of players the past couple of years. The thing that always impresses me across the board is the generosity. Donations of cash, time and plastic are given out with almost no thought when a cause comes up. I'm proud to call myself a disc golfer.
