Shoot The Breeze / Operation J-Town Storm« on: May 18, 2012, 05:12:58 AM »
Operation J-Town Storm
I’m going to start collecting goods at the J-Town Disc Golf Doubles League, The IL State Disc Golf Championships & Channahon Classic for the U.S. Army troops in Afghanistan. These care packages will be sent to my son Anthony’s Platoon/Company. He’s Company was deployed to Afghanistan on April 30, 2012 for 9-months. Although many of our soldiers are being withdrawn from Afghanistan, the U.S. will still have troops there until 2014. I had a chance to meet about 10 of his buddies or “Band of Brothers” and I have to say the U.S. is in great shape when it comes to whom they are sending overseas to represent our country. At first glance you see a bunch of 18-25 year old kids messing around and having fun. But when you actually get to know them and hear them talk you quickly realize that they are extremely focused and courageous men. They are mentally and physically some of the toughest people I have ever met. They’re highly trained infantrymen that are willing to sacrifice their own lives for each other and their country. When we here the words Army Strong we tend to chuckle a bit, but in reality the best words to describe what these guys are all about is “Army Strong.” It’s truly spectacular to witness this bond they have for each other and it’s humbling to see them grow together as men in the U.S. Army. They are definitely my heroes! Many of these men including my son will be leaving their wives and children for this 9-month period. So in this difficult time lets show some of our troops we care and appreciate their sacrifice for our country. Lets show them what the Disc Golf community is all about. My son Anthony has been playing disc golf almost all his life, so discs and accessories would be great. He’s been trying to get his fellow soldiers hooked on playing and it seems to be working. It would be cool to know some of our discs are flying in the deserts of Afghanistan. Any amount you can contribute for this cause would be greatly appreciated. It can be as simple as a pack of peanuts. I’ll start collecting this week and I will continue throughout the year. I’ve a huge list of items that they can and can’t receive. Please take your time and look through it. Thanks, Jesse The list is below and I also attached a word doc with the list. CARDS & LETTERS The troops love to hear from all of us and Mail brightens their days! These are the MOST IMPORTANT items we can send the troops & we can never have too many, so please keep writing! WEEK 7 - May 16, 2012
First Half #7 Community Park - Channahon TEES 18 Holes - Short Tees - Par 54 CONDITIONS The temperature to start the round was in the mid 60s with strong NE winds. The sun was out and it felt great. The temp dropped to the mid 50s by the end of the round. A very cool ending. The course was pretty much dry. Although the water level on the water holes were very high and deep. The wind on hole one seemed to be blowing a lot discs into the pond by hole two's tee pads. There were a whole lot of wet guys freezing their butts off. As always Community Park was in fantastic shape. COMMENTS Thanks again to Paco Grimes for all his dedication and hard work on the course. To think ten years ago this course used to be so brutally overgrown by the late spring through the end of summer players just didn’t want to play it. Now it’s an amazing place to play all year round. To our experienced Ams that pair up with a beginner. Your guidance towards these players is a major part of the future success of the league. Please be a mentor to these new players and make sure when they leave they feel like they had the coolest time and want to come back. It’s great to win but if feels a whole lot better knowing you helped make difference in someone’s game. You just might be helping the next great player in our area. White Men Can’t Jump! The last couple nights after league a few guys have started a pick-up game of basketball. It doesn’t look pretty but it looks and sounds very competitive. Maybe a new tradition has started. Tracy Kenner is back and getting the payouts ready for the night. This is a huge burden of our shoulders at the end of the night. Thanks Tracy! Next week is WEST PARK so to guarantee a spot try and get there when we open registration at 4:15 - 4:30pm. WE START AT 5:30 NEXT WEEK . Darrin Johnson & Matt Myers take second place by shooting a very nice round of 40 (14). They end up taking home $39 each. Darrin jumps into second place for the first half with this big second place win. Steve Forneris and Jason Riley tie for third but win the ctp playoff on hole #1 take the the honors. They end up splitting 50 bucks. Steve adds two huge points and still remains in first by two points for the first half. WEEK 6 - May 9, 2012
First Half #6 Trinity Links - Lockport TEES 18 Holes - Short Tees - Par 54 CONDITIONS Around 60 to start the round and dropped to around 50 by the end of the round. The recent rain made the course a bit muddy. The Trinity swamps where way up and hungry. A nice night buy a little cool. COMMENTS The Swamps of Trinity were very high, deep and ruthless as they swallowed up discs like there was no tomorrow. The otherwise short and relatively easier shots over the swamps of hole 1, 2 & 15 played major mind games with many players. At least 10 -15 discs from just last night lie in the dark abyss of the Trinity Swamps. The murder rake got another workout! Thanks again to Thor for letting us use the clubhouse. Also thanks to all the Trinity crew that have shaped these great course into what it is today. To our experienced Ams that pair up with a beginner. Your guidance towards these players are a major part of the future success of the league. Please be a mentor to these new players and make sure when they leave they feel like they had the coolest time and want to come back. It’s great to win but if feels a whole lot better knowing you helped make difference in someone’s game. You just might be helping the next great player in our area. Please don’t be discouraged if you’re an AM and had a rough night. Shake it off and try again next week. The more you play and learn from the league’s more experienced players the better your game will evolve. We’ve all been through this stage. The Taco Lady is back! Juanita & Scott will be selling tacos for a $1.50 at league for most of the rest of the year. Next week is CHANNAHON so to guarantee a spot try and get there when we open registration at 4:15 - 4:30pm. WE START AT 5:30 NEXT WEEK . PLAYERS 71 Players 35 PRO/ADV 36 AM/NOV TOP THREE PRO/ADV Buddy Lee & Justin Elmore wreak havoc on the Pro/Adv field by shooting an incredible round of 40. This is an awesome round and a new doubles record on the new Trinity layout. The old record of 41 was set back in week three by Tom M. and Al H. Lester & Justin end up splitting 129 bucks. We also had a new Cali record set with a great round thrown by Dave Kociuba. He finished a fantastic round of 42 (12) and took home $85. It’s been a long time since someone playing Cali has done this well. Tom Matesevac & Randy McMurray end up taking the third place honors for the night with a very nice round of 44 (10). They end up taking home 28 bucks each. They also tack on much needed points to their totals for the first half. TOP THREE AM/NOV Kester Jeffers & Brian Carey completely destroy the Am/Nov field by three strokes. They end up shooting an incredible round of 45 (-9). Kester has won every time he has been out this year. This is Kester’s third win in a row and he is putting on a clinic for the rest of the Am/Nov field. He now jumps in to first place in points alone. Dan McMillin and Steve Rasberger take the second place honors and they split 39 bucks. They end up shooting a nice round of 48 (-6). We had a tie for third with the teams shooting good rounds of 49 (-5). Dave Broughton & Dave Pleski win the ctp playoff on hole #1 to capture the win. They end up taking home $19 and tack that important extra point on their totals. CTPS Justin Elmore - CTP Party Fund hole #2 = $51 Tony Laskowski- CTP Basket Fund hole #8 = $50 Joe Witzl - CTP Tournament Fund hole #16 = $50 Mario Guzman - CTP CFR Disc hole #1 = 2011 Channahon Classic Champion Glow Teebird ACES No Aces= $67 BIG MONEY NIGHT Justin Elmore wins first place in the PRO/ADV and wins the Party Fund ctp hole #2.
