Kyle Greenfield - 70

Brandon Gutierrez - 75
Joe Roppo - 85

Eric Smith - 72

Semi-finals (Mokena):

Alex Africa - 81
Kyle Greenfield - 89

Brandon Gutierrez - 51 thru 15 holes

Eric and Brandons round was called when darkness fell, and Eric chose to call it after 15 holes rather than finish out the round at a later date.

Finals (Highland):

Brandon wins! He earned $80. Brandon persevered thru a lot of scheduling conflicts and issues to be the first name on the Aces and Chains Finals Cup trophy for the Novice division. Congratulations to Brandon!

My apologies for the long delay before posting the results. I've been in survival mode at the shop. But nonetheless, I've been remiss for not posting these...

I'm going to break it up again by division so each post doesn't go on forever.

Yup, anything overstable.

Destroyer, Xcaliber, Flick, Boss, Ape, etc.

But, as Frank says, it depends on your arm. Everyone is different. I spoke to someone at the shop several months back who was throwing a Roadrunner sidearm over 400 feet on a rope.

But typically, most people throw an overstable disc because of the torque involved with a side arm throw.

Sorry Aces no harm meant I love your store and have purchased all my discs from you. I was out on a course the other day and someone told me about the liquor store but I had never heard about it I was more curious then anything.

I didn't take it the wrong way. Just couldn't resist the shameless plug. Thank you so much for your business.

Shameless plug:

STA-BLE.

Sort of like a Vibram V.P.

Supposed to be good for the wind, or players who like to use a lot of snap while putting.

PDGA / Re: Worlds Smoking Ban
« on: October 18, 2011, 10:41:36 AM »
This is just my opinion.

To me, this all comes down to the saying "perception is more important than reality."

I hate that saying.

And so, the PDGA board wants disc golf to "look good" in the eyes of others. Presumably, they want disc golf to have a better rep so the sport will grow bigger. That is the real reason for the ban, and more to the point, the reason a lot of people will support the ban.

We aren't really trying to stop smoking. No, we're just trying to hide the fact that we do so everyone will look up to us and say....."hey, there's a nice sport to play and/or watch."

It certainly isn't about the cigarette butts. I can promise you that. (Though not having them on the course would be a very welcome side effect.)

I don't smoke, and I don't like cigarette smoke one bit. But that doesn't mean I agree with a ban of smoking, while outdoors nonetheless!

And this is why I shy away from most of the conversations about making the sport bigger. Most people I talk to begin to think in terms of making the sport "look better" by mandating collared shirts, smoking bans, and ideas like that.

If we are going to talk about "looking better" in the eyes of the public, then we should instead concentrate on real concrete ways of improving our image that are based in fact, not in perception.

Improving our courses thru hard work and donations, helping the community (Ice bowl), and bringing new people into the sport are all ways to improve how we are perceived without giving up our freedoms. I could name off a dozen people from the area who do just that, without breaking a sweat. A hearty thank you, from me, to everyone who does. That is, in my opinion, the proper way to be a good role model for the community, and to increase the positive vibes for disc golf as a whole.

A smoking ban? Bah!

I once asked my Mom about the saying "Perception is more important than reality" and she said....

"It sounds like somebody's lying!"

Trust a Mom to put things in their proper perspective.

"Now how am I supposed to give Eric a hard time for not being able to play all week?!?"

I thought you would have given him a hard time already....

Besides, Eric doesn't read the forum. It's too intellectual for him.

See how I did that?  8)

Just to whet your appetites, here is the prize money for each division (based on # of paid players)

Novice: $80
Recreational: $90
Intermediate: $100
Advanced: $90

Each division winner will also get their name put on the "perpetual trophy" that we will display in the shop. Each year, another winners name will be added. We will unveil this trophy next year at our "grand re-opening." If possible, we'd like to get a picture of all the winners with the trophy at that time.

First round at Westpark:

Tafe Hemler vs.

If anyone has Jason Smith's phone number, or email where we can reach him, please let us know. If we can't schedule his round by this Saturday, we'll have to declare him out. (Shop phone number is 815-207-8874)

A few more first round results have been posted above.

Leagues & Tourneys / Results - first week
« on: October 03, 2011, 02:10:53 PM »
Here are some results from some of the first week matchups:

Novice:

Larry Pennuto 76
Kyle Greenfield 70

Brandon Gutierrez 75
Joe Roppo 85

Eric Smith 72
Aaron Studer 84

Kenny Loeffler 74
Alex Africa 72

Recreational:

Sean Callahan 71
Matt Hotuyec 65

Ryan Barcas 71
Blaine Schepp 72

This was a hotly contested match. I hear that DP (Barcas) won it by deucing the last hole. Way to be a true deucebag Dr. Pepper!

Still waiting on Nugget, and Jason Smith. If anyone knows how to get in touch with them, please have them call the shop at 815-207-8874. Kyle Leos is out of town as well, which is why I haven't called for a forfeit for either of them. But I'll have to do so soon....

Intermediate:

Preliminary rounds:

Bryan Sullivan 67
DJ Eskra 71

Kevin Macuiba 69
John Boyd 64

First round matchups:

Randy Moore Sr. 64
John Boyd 63

John Marren 68
Cory Clements 62

Jesse Tackett 63
Mike Thompson 68

Kester Jeffers vs.
Bryan Sullivan

Sr. against Boyd was a tight round that went into sudden death. Boyd pulled it out with a deuce to bring his final score down to a 63. Deucebags are really hurting the Fox Valley faithful.

Advanced:

Jon Boster
Mike Conlee (Had to forfeit. Jon advances)

Ben Carrescia 63
Kris Linscott 68

Jason Riley 64
Matt Preston 66

Eric Fite 60
Tafe Hemler 68

With a blistering round of 60 (-12), Eric advances to the semi-finals against Jon Boster. Meanwhile, Tafe heads home to spray some Foil on his wounds. You may not remember what that is, but I bet Tafe does...

More to come. We'll try to occasionally post who is playing when and where in case anyone wants to come out and watch.
