Sanctioning Bag Tags

Mcfrolfer:
I can understand flipping your disc or disregarding some etiquette because you are amongst friends in a non-sanctioned environment.  Why would you want to play the game without following the rules, or being ignorant of the rules (oblivious)?

We are not oblivious to the rules on sat. We are just relaxed about the etiquette of DG. The fundamental rules are being followed and enforced. When you start pulling out the rulers and stopwatches the game loses it fun, at least imo.

That's exactly what I equate a less competitive round to be!
Guess those who play Saturday morning bag tags are just a bunch of cheaters and rule breakers!

What I've noticed with Saturday tags & I've mentioned it to Aaron, you guys are buddies. The same faces enjoying each others company. The rule I see broken often is the falling putt. Not so much on Saturday, but Sunday doubles. I've got to watch for the heel plant move. It's nice to be reminded of the common mistakes but I don't the rules are the issue. It's more about bonding & playing with friends. If you have a bad game, you go home with the highest tag. Guess who had the worst round in his history at Channahon? No names please. :) The rules need to be pointed out, but this area is reaching all levels of play. We have doubles, summer & winter, pro & am, tags, sanctioned, & unsanctioned. It's nice some of the rules were mentioned, we can see if the shoe fits.

My two cents for what it's worth. I totally agree with Jose. I think the biggest draw to Saturday bag tags is the easy going attitude with everyone. I think new players are inclined to join us because of this. It is less intimidating than some other leagues. It is also a great jumping off point for players to join other leagues happening through out the week.
On rule enforcement: While I don't think people ignore the rules by any means I do believe not everyone knows all the rules and it is great for the newer players to feel they will be helped as apposed to penalized. (<-- ME INCLUDED).
I don't want anyone to feel like this is a league for newbs but all we really play for is bragging rights (and perhaps a little Fireball). So I feel keeping it from being sanctioned will in fact keep it loose and fun and continue to encourage growth of the league with hopefully more new players joining us.
I think it's a great group of guys and (girl) out there that will always keep the competitive level high even if it is for fun.

Side note: GO BEARS!

there is still a competitive element to tags, walking out with the lowest number and trying for the ctps. If people didnt care about their score, then they would just turn in the tag at the beginning and ask for the highest number, then leave

having the OPTION to have it sanctioned is a great idea. If Ive been playing good golf and want to go shoot west/channy/shorewood and have that help my pdga rating out, then why should that be a bad thing?

I started with bag tags this year and have switched to the sunday leagues for a more competitive element. have I gotten better? no, still the same player. I go for a chance to learn from other players and have more of a chance to win some $$.

Sundays have a great group of people that are always willing to help out, share rule knowledge, etc with other players. Casual rounds should be that, casual, with nothing on the line. When there are ctps/competing for tag numbers...all you are leaving out is use of the mini/rule enforement and its an inch short of a tournament (minus paying out the $)

All in all, I think having the OPTION to have it sanctioned for those that want to come shoot a hot round, have it help their pdga score, and walk away with the lowest tag (you know, for bragging rights) is a great addition to the league options JTown has to offer
