SHOREWOOD IS GOING!!
« on: February 22, 2010, 11:00:03 AM »

It appears our days of disc golf at Shorewood are coming to an
unfortunate end. The Village has other plans for Shorewood
Park. They plan to overhaul the DuPage River corridor throughout
the village over the next few years and Shorewood Park is high
on the list. The timeline does not appear to be set, but, 5-15
years was mentioned somewhere. Who knows when the course
will get the axe?

The following URLs will take you to the .PDF files showing the
proposed changes to Shorewood Park and the overall scope
of the project:

Get out there and play all you can....WHILE you can.

Shorewood Park's position high on the priority list:

This sux.

where in those plans did you read that they where going to remove the disc golf course?   from what it looks like they may need to move some baskets but they are not taking out the tees.

I couldn't imagine the course, the only "real" current user of an
under-utilized park, being allowed to continue to exist when so
many additional facilities and activities are being planned. We're
truly fortunate that we "hogged" the park for as many years as
we did. I'm thinking the tees are on the drawing as reference points.
The Ropes Course (supervised!) and related clearing appear to
cover the entire area currently used by all of hole 9 and half of
8 and 10. #12 has most of the middle of the fairway occupied
with Council Ring and Fireplace. You get the idea. There are
just too many facilities planned for an area where a disc golf
course is already "shoe horned" into a postage stamp-sized
park. It'd be pure insanity to allow disc golf to exist when moms
are wheeling baby buggies on the path and junior is climbing
the rock wall and sis is camping with her BlueBird Troop in one
camping/picnic area, next door neighbor Tommie is camping with his
Cub Scout Pack in the second camping/picnic area and cousin
Nick's Boy Scout Troop is using camping/picnic area #3. Da joint
will be jumpin' on the weekends. I remember the course 25+ years
ago when it was a run down park in the outskirts of a sleepy, little
town. We're being ousted by progress. I'd like nothing better than
to be proven wrong in my belief that the course is toast....but I'm
not holding my breath.

We'll just have to hope the bulldozers are a few years off.

What's interesting is the state can't pay their vendors. The state owes Moore Glass $60,000. I know someone else that went BK with $250,000 the state owed him. I'm sure it's a grant from the state & Channahon is getting a grant.
I can't help but wonder where the money comes from. The local talk radio is saying the state's in financial trouble. National news says Illinois is in the bottom 10 with financial problems. Go Figure!

This is sad News.  Would suggest a Summit of Brother Disc Golfer's to create a stir at least.  My suggestion is that we pull together our North South East and West Club's and start a petition to save or create another stomping ground in the area.

..  Lets rip out the baskets at shorewood and bring them to highland and bring highlands to shorewood.... that way if they do rip it out we will have better baskets at highland and honestly the best thing about shorewood is it keeps traffic down on other courses.... they can deal with the old school baskets there.. just my opinion though

That is sad news. I started at Shorewood. Though it seems awfully short now, I remember being really puzzled the first time I heard someone say that the park was too easy. At that point, for me, Shorewood was still difficult enough. It is a great course for a quick round, too break in newbies at, or just to keep traffic down at the tougher courses in the area.

I've been walking a promising site in Mather Woods a lot lately. Mentioned it to Gary Lewis last year, but at the time, I had barely explored it. I believe after walking it that it would make a great spot for a new course. It won't rival Highland, but it has some nice features to create a course around. There is a couple creeks running thru it, and a few smaller (aka not as large as Highlands) ravines......one of which forms a cool fishbowl like area. There are walking paths thru it already, but I believe there is enough room to make a decent course there without creating a safety issue with the paths.

I'm no expert on this, that's for sure. But I would like to explore the idea further. If anyone else is interested in looking at it with me, or pointing me in the right direction on who to talk to in Plainfield, I'll be more than happy to put some time and effort into making it happen.

And who knows, maybe we could talk Shorewood into donating their baskets?

so i did some searching and contacted shorewood there are going to be changes but disc golf is staying the final plans for the park wont be ready till this winter so we have the rest of the summer to play

so don't be steeling baskets or they will probably change there mind on keeping it if they have to spend more money to to replace baskets

here is the reply i received and contact info

The disc golf course will be kept generally as it is, there may be the need to relocate some of the holes…

I was told a few weeks ago, by someone who would know (within the disc golf community), that shorewood isn't going anywhere and any reconfiguration of the park would simply mean reconfiguring of the course and that it would be staying...just confirming what the park district has said.
