Shawn Harmon Gets the Victory at Disc Golf’s J Town Ice Bowl in Channahon, Illinois
By K.C. Dermody, Yahoo! Contributor Network

The J Town Ice Bowl took place in Channahon, Illinois on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at the Community Park Disc Golf Course. This was a PDGA sanctioned C-Tier event with 82 disc golfers coming out to compete on rather chilly winter day in the Midwest.

This tournament served as a fundraiser for the Morning Star Mission, which supports both spiritual and physical hunger of the poor by providing food for the hungry, clothing for the needy and shelter for the homeless. This was the third annual event, and it was Shawn Harmon of Joliet, Illinois who captured the victory in the open division in overtime after tying with Chris Brenholtz of Downers Grove, Illinois. Both players had a final score of 12-under par.

In 2011, Harmon had a second place finish at the Dave Pitner Memorial in May, and he had a third place finish at the Whet Up or Shut Up Throwdown in June. It was Brenholtz who won the Whet Up or Shut Up Throwdown last year. He had a fourth place finish at J Town Ice Bowl last year, and an impressive sixth place finish at the Illinois State Disc Golf Championships that was held in July.

Finishing in third place behind Brenholtz was Rich Klein III of Pana, Illinois scoring 10-under par. Last year he had victories in the advanced division at the Bloomington Normal Open and the ROC the Worlds Preview #3 - Basil Marella.

Randy Moore of Oswego, Illinois was in fourth place with a score of 8-under par. Moore had a third place finish at the Oswego Open and at the JTown Disc Golf Club Invitational. In a tie for fifth place, was Alan Hermosillo of Blue Island, Illinois and Clayton Drake of Metropolis, Illinois, both scoring 7-under par.

The advanced division winner was Bryan Sullivan of Minooka, Illinois, scoring 11-under par. Sullivan had a win at the Pine Hills Experiment last March. He was followed by local Ben Carrescia who scored 8-under par, and in a tie for third at just a stroke behind, was Randy Moore Sr. and Jason Riley, both with a score of 7-under par.

Colleen Thompson captured the win for the women in the advanced division with a score of 11-over par. Thompson is from Lemont, Illinois and had several wins in the same division last year, including last year's Ice Bowl event and the Channahon Classic held in September. She also had an impressive second place finish for the women in the open division at the Indiana State Championships in July.

Danny Bilow won the intermediate division scoring 6-under par, while Ryan Barcas was the winner of the recreational division, John Seaborn took the win in the novice division and Danny Tejero won for the under 19 boys.

Congratulations to all the winners and competitors for a great day of disc golf for a good cause!

PDGA: Disc Golf’s J Town Ice Bowl in Channahon, IL on February 4
By K.C. Dermody, Yahoo! Contributor Network
Jan 21, 3:02 pm EST

The J Town Ice Bowl will be held in Channahon, Illinois on February 4, 2012 at the Community Park Disc Golf Course. This is a PDGA sanctioned C-Tier event, and like all Ice Bowl events, also serves as a charity fundraiser. This tournament will support the Morning Star Mission. Their mission serves to help relieve both spiritual and physical hunger of the poor by providing food for the hungry, clothing for the needy and shelter for the homeless.

Player registration will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., with a player's meeting at 9:15 a.m. and tee-off at 9:30 a.m. All divisions will play two rounds of short tees, and all players are required to bring two non-perishable food items, or pay an additional $5 which will be donated direct to the charity.

The course has been in existence for two decades and is a grassy, natural course with some trees and both wind and water hazards. It's a very scenic, though mostly flat, course that is well-maintained with newer baskets.

This will be the third annual J Town Ice Bowl tournament. Last year's event took place in the same location and it was Tom Matesevac of Minooka, Illinois who captured the win in the open division. Matesevac went on to get several victories in 2011, including the BNDGC First Flight in May and the Mokena Big D Doubles in September.

Allen Hermosillo of Blue Island, Illinois had a second place finish in the second annual J Town Ice Bowl. He went on capture several wins last year, including the Snow Blown II last month and the Illinois State Golf Championships in July.

Kyle Chapman was the winner of the advanced division. Chapman is from Montgomery, Illinois and went on to win the intermediate division at the St. Louis Open, and also had a victory at the PDGA Amateur Junior Divisional Doubles in July in the under 19 boys division.

Colleen Thompson of Lemont, Illinois, captured the win in the same division for the women. She went on to take a second place finish in the open division at the Indiana State Championships in July, and she had several victories in the advanced division, including the Channahon Classic in September.

Come out and have fun with some of these great disc golf players and help support a good cause at the same time.

PDGA Sanctioned Leagues Available This March 2012

BY PDGASTAFF  |  JAN 04, 2012

The PDGA will be providing the resources for players to earn PDGA rated rounds playing in their hometown weekly leagues. If you already have leagues, you'll be able to continue running them pretty much how you've been running them. The PDGA will simply provide the ratings service for your league players.

“Okay, so how much this is going to cost?”  All players will pay $1 per week. There's no extra fee for nonmembers. League Directors keep half (50 cents) for admin costs, final standings payouts, course improvements, charities, etc and the PDGA gets the other half (50 cents). We feel splitting the fees with the League Director is essential to help strengthen local disc golf clubs and help with course maintenance to keep our courses looking nice.

League Directors will determine your weekly league entry fee. If you want to play for $2, $5, $20, or FREE that’s up to your league. The PDGA league sanctioning fee will be just $25 for a 12-week league. The PDGA is not going to track payouts for leagues. It’s up to the League Directors how they wish to go about handling their leagues (meaning Ams can accept cash without losing Am status).

The March 2012 roll out will be the first phase of the program. We are requesting that all events be standard singles play until we get the system established. Once we get everything working smoothly we hope to provide the option for other formats including handicapped, global ratings based, team and even doubles leagues. This may take some time to develop all of these formats. But once we get more players getting rated rounds then it will be much easier to establish the parameters for how these other formats will work. Plus the IT side of things will need a little time to incorporate handling the different formats.

If you want to ask questions about the PDGA league please feel free to visit the PDGA DISCussion Boards where I will be answering questions or email me directly at Kmccoy@PDGA.com

PDGA: The Results of Disc Golf’s Snow Blown II in Rockport, Illinois
By K.C. Dermody, Yahoo! Contributor Network
Dec 13, 4:21 pm EST

The Snow Blown II took place in Rockport, Illinois at the Trinity Links Disc Golf Course on Saturday, December 10, 2011. The course has a wide variety of holes and is moderately wooded with flat terrain, including some great water holes. This PDGA sanctioned C-Tier event had 26 disc golfers in the competition, and it was Allen Hermosillo of Blue Island, Illinois, who was crowned champion of the Open division with a score of 9-under par.

This was Hermosillo's 40th tournament of the year, and he's had several wins, including the Illinois State Disc Golf Championships, the Iron Lion Open, the South Bend Clover Classic and the HOMIE Fall Celebration.

Following Hermosillo in second place, was Tom Matesevac of Minooka, Illinois, with a score of 5-under par. Matesevac has played in quite a few events in 2011 himself, and has had several victories, including the Mokena Big D Doubles and the BNDGC First Flight.

In a tie for third place, was Chris Brenholtz of Downers Grove, Illinois and Clayton Drake of Metropolis, Illinois, both scoring 3-under par. Brenholtz had a win at the Whet Up or Shut Up Throwdown in June, and Drake had a second place finish just behind Brenoltz in the same tournament, and a win in the Advanced division at the Bowling Green Blast in March.

Bryan Marcott of New Lenox, Illinois, took fifth place with a score of 1-under par. He had a win back in April at the Spring Opener. Finally, it was Matt Coyne of Plainfield, Illinois in sixth place with a score of 9-over par.

Aaron Scott of Yorkville, Illinois was the winner of the Advanced division, scoring 3-under par. Scott had a second place finish in the same division at the Fox Valley Metro Invitational in September. Randy Moore of Oswego, Illinois followed Scott in second place, with a score of 1-under par, and at third place in the Advanced division was Jon Boster of Joliet, Illinois, scoring 1-over par.

The Intermediate division win went to Aaron Meyer of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, with a score of 2-under par, and Jason Rocks of Woodridge, Illinois, followed at just a stroke behind, with a score of 1-under par, while Eric Willhite of Glen Ellyn had a third place finish, scoring 3-over par.

The Recreational division win went to James LoPresti of Homer Glen, Illinois with a score of 1-under par. LoPresti had a win in the Novice division at the Joliet Disc Golf Championship in October.

Congratulations to all the winners and competitors on a great game of disc golf!

J-Town Disc Golf Club Meeting
11/14/11 5:00 PM-- Meeting #14

McDonald's on Jefferson in Shorewood.

Meeting called to order, 5:00

Members in attendance:
Frank Grimes
Jason Poole
Dean Bingham
Ray Hill

1) Financial Report
(see attached)

2) Handicap League (recap)
* Discussed adding a cut off time for sign-ups to accommodate all the score card preparation and inputting on the laptop.

* It was voted on that the "Club Only CTP" was not effective in raising attendance and will not be offered next year.

* Awareness that a better job has to be done advertising the fact that you do not have to be a J-Town Disc Golf Club member to participate in Handicap Leagues.

3) J-Town logo on club merchandise
* The board went through a catalog of options for Club.  After much reasoning, the board compiled a list of what will be ordered.  Jason Poole will be placing the order and we will reevaluate sizes and colors as soon as we gather more feedback from the club.  We will make available as soon as possible all merchandise ordered.  Starting with a mix of Orange and Blue Shirts, Polos, Hooded Sweatshirts, T-Shirts, and Dry Fits with the JTown club logo.  These will be used to raise more funds for the club.

4) Club Challenge vs. Fox Valley
* Thor Batchelor was appointed to captain the Club Challenge with Fox Valley Disc Golf Club on 11.19.11

* Thor was unable to make the meeting so details of the challenge were casually discussed as a backup plan in case things fell through with the appointed captain.

* As a backup it was decided Dave K will serve as a captain for J-Town.

5) Ice Bowl
Ice Bowl merchandise winnings from 2011 and what to do what them

* Thor has all the details from Icebowl.com so this topic will be moved to the next meeting.  It's understood that J-Town will have access to Ice Bowl merchandise for finishing in the top 10 of all 2011 Ice Bowl totals.

6) Open Q&A

* Frank Grimes unveiled his 2012 Ice Bowl flier that Jesse Sanz and himself put together.  Work and preparation have already begun on what promises to be a great event for the entire J-Town Community.  Donations are already being sought and accepted.  Please contact Frank Grimes for any and all contributions.

Meeting Adjourned, 6:30

Courses / Re: New Lenox Baskets
« on: July 27, 2011, 11:57:59 AM »
I spoke with Gary the week of IL State, ran into him at Highland while he was painting the Tee Markers.  He said that he had been in talks with the New Lenox Park District about moving some holes and making Haines smaller, per the PD request.  They (Gary and PD) agreed to make it a 12 hole course.  Something about kids hitting each other going back and forth in the woods, not enough room for others to use the park, etc etc.

Anyways, he said after they agreed to trim it down to 12 holes and after that is when the baskets were taken.  I mentioned to him that maybe if the PD would have done a better job communicating with the people/ players in the park (A sign or something) maybe they would not have gotten stolen.  My thought was that a bunch of kids thought, "hell if they are going to take it down lets get ourselves a basket"...  I am not condoning what happened, just saying I can see where some casuals may have been a little "protective" and then turned to stealing.

I hope the baskets are turned in... hope hope wish wish... maybe if the thief or thieves realizes the PD isn't taking the whole course down they will have a change of mind..

until then only 9 holes at Haines is this weeks rumor

just a thought..
