Title: Chain Reaction 2010 - Channahon - June 26th & 27th
Post by: Aces and Chains on May 05, 2010, 06:12:18 AM
This event is only $25 for amateurs  if you are a PDGA member. Here is the info on the event in Channahon:

June 26th & 27th:

AM/Pro C-Tier tournament playing 2-18+ hole rounds for a total of 36+ holes. Extra holes may be added as needed. I should have enough baskets to have the usual 4 temp holes. Cash payout for Pros, $100 added to the Pro cash pot.

Channahon is one of the premier disc golf courses in the Joliet area. This is the best kept course in the area (Great job as always Frank!) Come out and enjoy the beauty, and the challenge of Channahon.

Divisions schedule is as follows:

Saturday:

Jr. divisions
Recreational
Advanced

Sunday:

Novice
Intermediate
Pro divisions

Registration will be open from 8am-9am both days. Players meeting at approx. 9:15am, and tee off at approx. 9:30am both days.

Pre-registration closes at 9pm on Friday, June 25th. Registration the day of the event is an additional $5.

Pre-registration is available at www.acesandchains.com

All divisions will play from the short tees for round one, and the long tees for round two.

I received the trophies yesterday, and they look fantastic! See below for a sneak peak at each trophy. I could only attach 4 images, so the advanced trophy is not pictured. But, you get the idea....

Thanks, Patrick.

I'm trying to decide what to put in the AM's players pack.....

I could put $10-15 of Ace card money to spend on plastic, etc.

Or I could do a select your own tournament stamped disc for a players pack (though this would eat into the prize money more.)

Am's are only $25 with PDGA number, so the players pack could significantly effect final prize money too.

What does everyone else think?

Patrick,
What I when I get into situations with multiple options is ask input from someone that's run the road. Scott Pitner may offer some advice. A local TD, someone from Oswego may offer some advice. I try to be fair, unfortunately it's impossible to keep everyone happy.
I have no opinion for what you do. It's a team effort to run a tournament, I hope you have help.

Thanks for the advice Frank. I've spoken with Scott, and several others. I'm looking to hear opinions from some of the J-Town players to see what everyone likes to get in their player pack. Do they like funny money (ie: pick your own players pack), or a tournament stamped item, or perhaps something I haven't thought of yet?

I'm leaning towards a "pick your own" players pack.

Anyone else have any opinions they would like to share?

Both as a TD and as a player, the pick your own is nice. From a TD perspective you don't need to guess how many people are going to play ahead of time. From a player perspective, I am picky about what I throw. If it's not a disc I throw, I look for something that I can give away to new players (or my wife or daughters).

Thanks again for the advice guys. I've posted on a few other forums, and it seems like the only repeated suggestion I get is the "pick your own" player pack. So, that's what I'm going to go with. Considering the low $25 entry fee, I'm going to go with a $10 player pack.

I'm thinking of ordering some t-shirts with the tournament stamp on them. Do any of you have an interest in a tournament shirt? Will these sell well? Tournament stamp can be seen here:

Hey Frank, I think you jinxed me! Lol.

After you posted that, my wife informed me that I should have a backup in case she can't help (long story.) And, I had already been informed by my co-TD that he has decided to move to Colorado. Needless to say, I was starting to get a bit nervous about the whole thing.

But, we all know how great the sport of disc golf is, and how helpful people can be if you give them a chance. I spoke with Thor, and he has tentatively agreed to co-TD both events with me. That was a huge load of worry off my mind! Then, on Saturday, I received another offer to help with setup and registration in the morning. So, I am back to being all set with a team of experienced people around me.

I am planning to have a well run tournament that starts on time, and finishes up smoothly. Everything is coming together well.

Thanks again for all your advice and help.

Title: Sweet Trophies ordered!
Post by: Aces and Chains on June 10, 2010, 08:40:17 AM
I cracked open the checkbook a few days ago and ordered some custom hardwood disc golf trophies for both of my tournaments. They will be replicas of an actual golf disc complete with the tournament stamp, and text saying 1st place and the division.

These are by far the sweetest trophies I have seen:

http://www.displayyourdisc.com/

When I get them, I will post a picture of the actual discs.

I ordered a first place trophy for each major division: MPO, Adv, Int, Rec, and Novice.

How sweet would it be to have one of these hanging on your wall?

Thanks Ben!

Here is a sneak peak at one of the trophies. It's still raw wood, so it's going to look even sweeter once the finish gets put on.

Registrations are "pouring in" now. (Sorry, couldn't resist the pun after last nights rain storm.)

The normal temp holes will not be used because all the pavillions on the hill are in use. I'd rather not have an injured picnic goer from flying discs.

I'm going to look over the course in the next few days to see where I can put some decent temp holes. I have a few ideas, but would welcome any input from everyone. Anyone seen any good temp holes used at Channahon in the past other than the four going around the hilly area by 18?

Results have been posted.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to participate. It was a great turn out for my first tournament, and I hope everyone had a good time.

Sundays round had a rough start with a torrential downpour for about 20 minutes at the beginning. But, like the warriors that you are, everyone kept playing. We were rewarded by a beautiful day by about 10am.

Saturday was blistering hot and humid, but the rain held off.

A big thanks to Bill, Cory, Jon, Jason P, Ray, Jason R, John, and everyone who lent a hand with registration, scoring, and hauling items up and down the hill. I really appreciate all your help.

I'd also like to give a big thanks to Dan Pastore for playing, friendly advice, and for donating some sweet ABC discs for an extra CTP hole.

Thanks to my wife Diane (not that she'll read this) for helping out and for putting up with me.

Lastly, thanks to the sponsors - Innova, Discraft, Vibram Discs, ABC Discs, and Celestine Salon and Spa in Darien.

I would also like to give a big thanks to Frank Grimes for all his help. He took a lot of extra time to get the course ready during the week.

That's why we call it Frank's House.

As always, Channahon was a beauty and a challenge, and that's in large part to all of Frank's efforts to keep it that way.

I know that he did a lot of weed whacking, and spread a lot of mulch in the last few days leading up to the tournament. All this, and during trying times too. So, a big thanks goes out to Frank. When you see him out on the course, please take the time to stop and thank him for all his hard work.

And for those of you wondering why the 10 meter circles weren't up to Frank's standards, especially on hole 2, that's because I painted them. So don't blame Frank! Lol. It wasn't until hole 3 that I figured out the right way to hold onto the thing to get a nice circle.

I would also like to thank Ellen Macuiba and everyone at the Park District for working with me, and for the prep work that they did on the course as well.

Another thanks goes out to Scott Pitner for his advice, and for letting me hang around and help some at one of his tournaments so I could see how some of it's done first hand.

I'd also like to thank Ken Loeffler, Adam Gerencher, and Jason Riley for bringing out the temp baskets.

If I've forgotten anyone, I humbly apologize. It was a long weekend, and I'm still a bit frazzled. Getting out to play leagues tonight should help. See you there.
