Title: Sanctioning Bag Tags
Post by: aaron49423 on February 27, 2013, 09:36:30 AM
I have been asked if there is any interest in sanctioning Saturday tags.  For the people that check in here, can you please respond with your feelings on this?

Thank you!

what would be the needed cost to implement this (aside from the ace and ctp money)?

I think it would be a great idea. I love tournaments, but my rating doesn't :-X

You know I am for it...even though I suck, I would like to have more chances to improve my rating.

For me, I think just competing for the lowest number tag is enough.  We are fortunate to have a variety of opportunities in the J-Town area for competition.  Many of them do include a chance to improve one's rating.

I personally enjoy the laid back atmosphere the bag tag league provides.  I don't feel as though every league/tourney or chance to play has to be at such a competitive level.

While I enjoy competition and plan my disc golf schedule with the competition in mind, I often don't have the opportunity to play a "casual" round...The bag tags provide that casual round for me.

I am not in favor of bag tags being a handicap league but in fairness I will say that if the $1 is an option and I can still participate in tags without being in the rating of the league, I would continue to play on Saturday mornings.  If it was mandatory, I would probably discontinue playing in the bag tag league as I already play in the Tuesday night Handicap league.

Just my 2 cents.

Kevin

I would be in favor of the sanctioning with two stipulations...

1. You have the choice to opt out of the sanctioning for any given week.  Some weeks or at some courses, weather etc I may not feel like having a round rated, but I would like to play for tags.

2.  There is a minimal amount of paperwork/time involved for Aaron.  I am more than willing to help out with the load if there is any, but if it becomes a chore than it may not be worth the trouble.

Agreed.

On another note, any idea if/when sat tags will be moved to a different day?

or about how long it would take to get squared away with the PDGA to get the sanctioning started

Saturday tags will remain on Saturday.  I have a schedule ready for spring.  Tuesday night handicap also plays for tags.

I had forgotten that Tuesday nights play for tags as well, therefore, that just reinforces in my mind that Saturday tags should remain NOT handicapped.

Tuesday is a handicap league.  There wasn't anything said about Saturday being a handicap, just sanctioned.  I imagine you'll have the option for sanctioning.  You are given the option on Tuesday's. I do not have preference.  Not a big deal to me.

Don't be intimidated or confused by the handicap league.  Bag tags are sorted with your scratch score (your true score without a handicap).  The sanctioned rounds are, also, submitted with your scratch score.  The payouts are determined by your handicap score.  The league is available for players that want to get the experience of singles play, as you would in a tournament.  The handicap is similar to a bowling league.  This allows more people to compete against each other without worrying about not having enough in your division.  I believe it makes you a better player.  Some think that it is not fair, but if you play frequently, it all evens-out in the end.  Handicap system is designed to keep it fair.  If people want to sandbag, then they are just giving their money away, and good luck making it beneficial for the entire season.

Great explanation! It definitely all evens out and it is very worth it. My rating might not reflect it, but I learned a lot about the sport that it probably would have taken years to learn otherwise.

I would love to have the Saturday round sanctioned.

I basically agree with Kevin. Saturday leagues are a casual round.  If you start adding the sanction aspect then it will become far more competitive and people will become rule sticklers.  Plus the main reason I come out even though I have sucked lately is that its at least a fun round.  If it is rated I will be less inclined to.

I like the lay back atmosphere of "just go out and throw" our group is having and it's encouraging many new players into the sport because of it, (It's freezing and we keep having big turn outs). I'm pretty neutral about making it sanction as it's just an option and not everyone has to do it but if players are going to do it we should group up the people who are sanction into the same squad/group when they play, that way everyone will be more serious.

I can understand flipping your disc or disregarding some etiquette because you are amongst friends in a non-sanctioned environment.  Why would you want to play the game without following the rules, or being ignorant of the rules (oblivious)?  Especially, if you play in sanctioned tournaments throughout the year.  Bad habits equals inconsistent play.  I think the most abused rules are the 10-meter, foot faults, 30-seconds.  The Pros can be just as bad at abusing these as the amateurs.  10 meter: A player must demonstrate full control of balance behind their lie before advancing toward the hole within 32'-9 3/4" of the hole.  Everybody always ask if they are outside.  Sometimes its obvious.  Walk it off, and its not ten paces.  I know everybody's strides are different, but unless you're taking huge steps, its at least 11-12 paces.  A three foot stride is impressive.  It still would need to be at least 11 paces with a three foot stride.  Foot Faults: If you draw a line from the pole of the basket through the center of your disc/marker, this is where your supporting point needs to be within 30 centimeters (approx. 12").  Straight through on that line, not off to the side.  If you have your heel on that line, pivot when you throw, and lift up your heel before you release the disc; your supporting point is no longer in the line of play.  You are not allowed to come in contact with your marker.  You cannot be touching O.B. when you release the disc (you get a meter of relief perpendicular (90 degrees) from any O.B. line.  You cannot be touching off of the tee pad when you release the disc.  30 seconds: You have the right to mark your lie at anytime, of course, if you are not impeding the other players (potentially a courtesy violation).  A maximum of 30 seconds is allowed to each player to make a throw after:  1)the previous player has thrown, and 2)the player has taken a reasonable time to arrive at the disc and mark the lie, and 3)the playing area is clear and free of distractions.  Sorry, just wanted to state a few things for the people that do not know the rules.

We are not oblivious to the rules on sat. We are just relaxed about the etiquette of DG. The fundamental rules are being followed and enforced. When you start pulling out the rulers and stopwatches the game loses it fun, at least imo.

That's exactly what I equate a less competitive round to be!
Guess those who play Saturday morning bag tags are just a bunch of cheaters and rule breakers!

What I've noticed with Saturday tags & I've mentioned it to Aaron, you guys are buddies. The same faces enjoying each others company. The rule I see broken often is the falling putt. Not so much on Saturday, but Sunday doubles. I've got to watch for the heel plant move. It's nice to be reminded of the common mistakes but I don't the rules are the issue. It's more about bonding & playing with friends. If you have a bad game, you go home with the highest tag. Guess who had the worst round in his history at Channahon? No names please. :) The rules need to be pointed out, but this area is reaching all levels of play. We have doubles, summer & winter, pro & am, tags, sanctioned, & unsanctioned. It's nice some of the rules were mentioned, we can see if the shoe fits.

My two cents for what it's worth. I totally agree with Jose. I think the biggest draw to Saturday bag tags is the easy going attitude with everyone. I think new players are inclined to join us because of this. It is less intimidating than some other leagues. It is also a great jumping off point for players to join other leagues happening through out the week.
On rule enforcement: While I don't think people ignore the rules by any means I do believe not everyone knows all the rules and it is great for the newer players to feel they will be helped as apposed to penalized. (<-- ME INCLUDED).
I don't want anyone to feel like this is a league for newbs but all we really play for is bragging rights (and perhaps a little Fireball). So I feel keeping it from being sanctioned will in fact keep it loose and fun and continue to encourage growth of the league with hopefully more new players joining us.
I think it's a great group of guys and (girl) out there that will always keep the competitive level high even if it is for fun.

Side note: GO BEARS!

there is still a competitive element to tags, walking out with the lowest number and trying for the ctps. If people didnt care about their score, then they would just turn in the tag at the beginning and ask for the highest number, then leave

having the OPTION to have it sanctioned is a great idea. If Ive been playing good golf and want to go shoot west/channy/shorewood and have that help my pdga rating out, then why should that be a bad thing?

I started with bag tags this year and have switched to the sunday leagues for a more competitive element. have I gotten better? no, still the same player. I go for a chance to learn from other players and have more of a chance to win some $$.

Sundays have a great group of people that are always willing to help out, share rule knowledge, etc with other players. Casual rounds should be that, casual, with nothing on the line. When there are ctps/competing for tag numbers...all you are leaving out is use of the mini/rule enforement and its an inch short of a tournament (minus paying out the $)

All in all, I think having the OPTION to have it sanctioned for those that want to come shoot a hot round, have it help their pdga score, and walk away with the lowest tag (you know, for bragging rights) is a great addition to the league options JTown has to offer

I do prefer to play for something, but unless someone else wants to step up and do the sanctioning I believe we should just leave it as is. I really don't care if they are sanctioned personally. I look on the bagtags as a casual round where I get to play with a good group of people. The chance to win a CTP is just icing on the cake.
