Gary Lewis!!!
It's Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day started just after the Civil War, & called Declaration Day. Civil war General John Logan started it,trying to help bring the Country together.
It became a Federal holiday in 1971. Prior to that it was honored on different days by different states. This day honors the dead who fought for our freedom.
Many, as I do, reflect on passed loved ones or whatever comes to mind to reflect on.
Among others, I'm reflecting on Gary. I know he hasn't passed on.
Our local Disc Golf is huge. Many may not know, but Gary is Mr. Disc Golf in our area. Running tournaments, working on courses, meeting the needs of the local golfers. Meeting with different officials in different community's promoting Disc Golf. He did this year after year. There is much more, the details are over the top.
It's not uncommon when I bump into older players who name drop Gary Lewis. It confirms his impact he's had over the years.
Gary is an icon to Disc Golf with great humility & reserve. My hat's off to you Gary, this Memorial Day weekend.

He is a living Legend in our area. We named an award last year after him called The Gary Lewis Achievement Award. This year will be the first year someone will receive it other than Gary. The individual who best represents the award will receive it at the J-Town Doubles League party October 16.
This is what the award reads.
Gary Lewis Achievement Award
Ultimate Ambassador to the Joliet Area Disc Golf Community
Tireless pioneer who through hard work consistently leads the sport of disc golf into a positive direction we love and call our own.
Inspiring role model who has devoted his blood, sweat and tears to help build a foundation to provide generations of disc golfers opportunities to compete, grow, and learn.
Disc golf icon and visionary leader who, through his generosity, humility and determination helped construct a united disc golf community that regardless of age, ethnic background, educational or economic level we are all honored to say we belong to.

When I win any plastic at Joliet events I like to have Gary sign them. That's what I call a home team autograph. He asked me why I wanted his autograph last time and I said I was selling them for $100 on ebay. lol So lucky to have a Hall of Famer and one of the best promoters of the sport so close by.

I want to bring attention the kind of man Gary is. He mentioned at the picnic at the discs I was looking for were gone. He then found what I wanted & gave them to me at the awards presentation. There is a ton of stuff going on at these affairs & he had the presence of mind to give me what I was looking for. Not only did he do that for me, he's done that for many over the years. Would you post something he's done for you or someone you know. I want to mention Gary is an icon relative to disc golf. He is in the Disc Golf Hall of Fame! He is very special & many what he's made of.
