I have had a bit of shitty luck this year to say the least. The year started off OK after not playing serious for several years because of knee and shoulder problems. I started playing in the J-Town doubles league the first half and started to really improve my game..then the luck started:
..At the Birdie Bash directed by Steve Rachan, there was a downpour leaving West park a mud pit. Between holes 13 and 14 I slipped on the hill and fell breaking my ribs and getting a concussion and of course covered in mud. I pushed on and ended up winning on my card the second round.
...Week 8 for doubles league was at west park on may 20th, which happened to be my 20th anniversary of my first game of disc golf which was also at West Park. I had a great partner and we had a great game finishing -10, but it was 4 strokes shy of the lead and 1 short of money. I skipped off the top the target for hole #2 missing my first ace. Also hit the pole on #10. that's right, 20 years and STILL searching for that first ace with many nears misses like that.
...At the IOS in Oswego, I played a great round and won my card. I was in third place and on the lead card for Nov. I had all the confidence that i was going to win, then I lost my favorite driver and the wind and rain came in and I fell to an 8th place finish.
...J-Town doubles week 10, I have played every week to this point and I am the only one who has played every week and not won any money. But this week is different, by luck of the draw I get Mike Eichorst for a partner. I am gonna win for sure now or at least get some money, right, RIGHT? Nope again West Park is destroyed by a downpour and the event was cancelled. I believe we were -17 after 18 holes with 6 to go but it was cancelled and meant nothing, still no money for me
..Just before week 11 at The oaks I got a combination of an eye infection and sunburned corneas leaving me unable to see for a couple weeks and of course unable to play disc golf. I had to quit playing in the league just as i was getting that extra confidence.
...After my eyes finally healed I started training like crazy for the 33rd Illinois State Championship playing nothing but The Canyons and Highland everyday. I was never more ready for a tournament in my life. The morning of the tournament I had to take my 9 year old daughter to the Emergency Room, and I was not able to get to the tournament in time to play. I did still get my players pack with the great stamp design.
..I have been playing a lot casually and no tourneys or league recently but the luck doesn't stop from near miss aces almost every round now to my car being broke into and my wallet stolen to loosing stuff on the course like discs and even cash. I sometimes wonder why i still do it..i love the sport so much, even with all this shitty luck, I will still be out there playing. At the very least I plan to play the final round of doubles at West Park, hopefully my luck will change.
